HAInnovPrev:
Empowering Nursing high education with innovative healthcare-associated infection prevention and control practices in Latin America
Project ID: 101083115
Abstract:
Healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance are the most common adverse health events in Latin America, significantly compromising patient safety by increasing hospital admissions, morbidity, and mortality rates. Since 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic, Latin America has faced significant social and financial challenges, exacerbated by the continuous pressure on healthcare organizations to deliver efficient and safe care. No professional group has been more affected than nurses, who provide round-the-clock care to vulnerable citizens in the community and hospitals.
The European Council recognizes structured education and training in this field as essential for the professional development of nurses. While local professional training is necessary, educational reforms are also required in Latin America to integrate a comprehensive approach to healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance into the nursing curriculum, preparing students to become proactive agents of change.
The primary goal of the HAInnovPrev project is to enhance the quality of nursing curricula in Latin America and contribute to the delivery of safe and high-quality care.
To achieve this, the HAInnovPrev consortium will develop nursing curricula for partner institutions in the areas of healthcare-associated infection prevention and control, as well as antimicrobial resistance. To accomplish this, an innovative pedagogical model will be designed, piloted, evaluated, and implemented. This process will involve at least 600 nursing students, 60 teachers, 100 clinical nurses, and all relevant stakeholders.
In this way, the project aims to improve the curricula and the quality of education in partner Higher Education Institutions, increase students’ competency levels, align them with the needs of the labour market and society, and ultimately enhance the prevention of healthcare-associated infections and the improvement of healthcare safety and quality. As key outputs, and to ensure the project’s sustainability, the HAInnovPrev Model, Simulation Scenarios, and an e-book will be developed and adapted to the Latin American cultural context.
Objectives:
General objective:
- To improve the quality of nursing curricula in Latin America;
- To contribute to the delivery of safe and high-quality care.
Specific Objectives:
- To evaluate and update healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance-related learning objectives, course contents, teaching and learning methods in each Latin American partner Higher Education Institution, throughout the development of the HAInnovPrev Model;
- To involve relevant stakeholders (nursing teachers, nursing students, clinical practice nurses, and other health professionals) in a participatory design process, echoing the needs and specificities of each social and cultural context.
- To integrate the main project outcomes into a digital handbook, containing guidelines for good healthcare-associated infection prevention and control and antimicrobial resistance stewardship practices, as well as innovative simulation scenarios;
- To expand the recently created InovSafeCare Community to enable the spreading and scaling up of the HAInnovPrev project results.
Target Groups:
– Nursing students
– Nursing Teachers
– Clinical Practice Nurses
